The purpose of animal control is to ensure the safety, health and welfare of citizens and the protection of people and property in the City of Melfort. The City has passed several bylaws to regulate and control the ownership and possession of animals within the City, to ensure the humane treatment of animals and to prohibit the keeping of dangerous animals within the city.

* Stray Animals or Animals at Large In the Melfort City limits you should call Animal Control Services Melfort. (306) 921-4977 If you are outside the city of Melfort, call your RM or Town Office. * Animal Neglect and or Abuse If you suspect neglect or abuse contact, “Saskatchewan Animal Protection Services” by phone at 306-382-0002 or Toll Free 1-844-382-0002. or on their website at http://animalprotectionservices.ca/report-animal-abuse/ * Emergency or Urgent Attention needed In the Melfort City limits you should call Animal Control Services Melfort. (306) 921-4977 or the RCMP at 911 If you are outside the city of Melfort, call the RCMP at 911. *Barking or Nuisance Complaints If you wish to call concerning excessive barking or nuisances call the City office at (306) 752 - 5911 to make a report to the By-law Officer *Deceased Animal In the Melfort City limits you should call Animal Control Services Melfort. What Happens… What Happens To Animals Turned In to Animal Control Animals who are turned in or captured by animal control will be taken to the SPCA. If they have a micro chip, city tag or rabies identification tag the owner will be notified. If the owner is unknown, the animal will be held for 3 *business days, giving the owner time to check in and see if their animal was turned in. It will be advertised on radio, in print and on social media that an animal has been turned in with a description of or photo of said animal for the three days it will be held. If no one comes forward to claim the animal it becomes the property of the North East SPCA where it will be put up for adoption if it is a suitable candidate for adoption. Animals found running at large and impounded will be charged a pound fee for the return of their animal. An additional boarding fee will be charged if the animal is not picked up by the end of the first day. See North East SPCA hours of operation. (*a business day is any day of the year that is not a holiday or the weekend. Example 3 business days from Friday would be Friday, Monday and Tuesday.)
